Nehemiah 2:1-2 ~ Manage Your Presentation

You have to manage your presentation. The way you present yourself to others is key to your success.

The only way to maintain a degree of control over the impression you deliver and the power you have is through your visual presentation. Your body language, your expressions, your verbal articulations. All other power maneuvers come down through this outlet. Presentation is the delivery mechanism by which you make your move in this world.

This is a lesson you learn from the scripture as well. Nehemiah was a cupbearer for the king of the time. This is a highly trusted position, as one of Nehemiah’s roles would be to screen the king’s drink for poison.

When working in the presence of the king, he always managed his presentation. You cannot have a bad day in front of the king. You cannot be negative in front of the king. Your very life may depend on the king’s emotional equilibrium, which will be affected by the way you present yourself.

It was not until Nehemiah was aware of the condition of Jerusalem in Nehemiah 2:1-2 that he was unable to maintain a positive appearance in the presence of the king. In fact, look at what the scripture says.

And it came to pass in the month of Nisan, in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when wine was before him, that I took the wine and gave it to the king. Now I had never been sad in his presence before. 2 Therefore the king said to me, “Why is your face sad, since you are not sick? This is nothing but sorrow of heart.””

Nehemiah 2:1-2

Look at what is recorded for us to learn.

Nehemiah had never once been sad in the presence of the king. If you want an example of self-control this is it. Or if you want an example of managing your presentation in public appearance, this is also it.

Where do we go wrong when we interact with others? It’s when others can tell just by looking at us that we aren’t ourselves. It’s when we give away that we’re having a bad day by our facial expressions. I’m not saying that we can’t have bad days, stress, or difficulty. I’m saying we don’t let it show. If people can tell something is wrong with you just by looking at you, they are in a perfect position to manipulate you. The emotional man is the manipulated man.

Nehemiah 2:1-2

It is the role of a man to suppress that type of behavior.  I know it’s no longer popular to say that men should do traditionally masculine things like manage their emotions, but as you well know as a reader of Spartan Christianity, I don’t really care what people find popular. A man has to manage his emotional state and, if he is having a bad day, return it to its original state of equilibrium as quickly as he can.

The man is the Bedrock of the family unit. If he’s unstable, the entire family unit’s unstable.

So even though he doesn’t have to be an emotionless robot [though I think he should manage his emotions as well] he does have the incredible responsibility of never letting the people he is leading [his family] know that he’s having a bad day. Men don’t get to have bad days. The crushing burdens of performance will beat a man down if he starts to show his bad days.

Let’s learn our lesson from Nehemiah:  manage your presence in front of other people, and other leadership. If you’re working, never let your boss or customers know you’re having a bad day. You don’t get to have a bad day. Additionally, no one cares if you do have a bad day as a man. And in fact, if you act like you’re not having a bad day, it won’t take too long before you forget that you weren’t having a bad day, and that will be back to a neutral day, maybe even a good one.

But it doesn’t matter how it turns out. All that matters is how you act. Actions are everything. Emotions and intentions are nothing. Motivations or nothing. Don’t obsess yourself with how you’re feeling, obsess yourself with how you’re acting.

Manage your presence in front of the king. Don’t let anyone know that you’re having a Down day.

You are an actor on stage. And your mask is one of masculine self-control. The goal is to eventually replace that mask with truly integrated masculine self-control that has no choice but to leak out of you. But until that moment comes, act like a man. Even if you don’t feel like one, act like one. And by acting like one you’ll eventually feel like one.

Diversity Is Overrated

Diversity is a buzzword that has been thrown around a lot lately, and it seems to be the go-to solution for any problem faced by organizations or societies. But the truth is, diversity is not a strength, but a weakness that is getting far too much attention.

While it makes people feel better to talk about, it is essentially a waste of your time. the only place diversity is a strength is in the bacteria in the gut.

The idea that diversity is a strength is based on the flawed assumption that people from different backgrounds bring unique perspectives and ideas to the table.

However, this assumption overlooks the fact that diversity can also cause serious problems and damage unity and strength.

One of the biggest issues with diversity is that it can create divisions within a group or organization.
diversity

When people come from different backgrounds, they often have different values, beliefs, and cultural norms. These differences can lead to misunderstandings, conflicts, and a lack of cohesion. People are always pursuing their own values. They will do this to the exclusion of the purpose of the group.

For example, consider a workplace with employees from different cultural backgrounds. One employee may feel offended by a joke that another employee thinks is harmless. This kind of situation can lead to tension and mistrust between employees, damaging the unity of the workplace. I don’t think we should tailor every word to avoid offending everyone, but culture itself will get in the way of unity.

Another issue with diversity is that it can create difficulty in communication.

When people come from different cultures or speak different languages, it can be challenging to understand each other. This can lead to misinterpretations, misunderstandings, and a lack of productivity. If you have ever tried to contact your customer service representative and found them to be in another country speaking with a thick dialect that is difficult to understand, you know the reality os this. And they also will not be in too much of a hurry to help you with your problem, as they generally do not share the company’s mission.

For instance, imagine a team of engineers working on a project where half of the team members speak English as a second language. The language barrier can lead to miscommunications and errors in the work, which can ultimately cause delays and cost overruns. Or think of a sports team where the same thing is happening. Lack of communication caused by diversity will cause damage to the effectiveness of the group.

Furthermore, diversity can also lead to a lack of ownership.

When there are too many people from different backgrounds in a group or organization, it can be challenging to determine who is responsible for what. This can lead to finger-pointing which can ultimately damage the effectiveness of the group.

Cnsider a committee responsible for organizing an event with members from different cultural backgrounds. If the event fails, it may be difficult to determine who is responsible, and the lack of accountability can lead to finger-pointing and a lack of trust within the group.

Diversity is not a strength, but a weakness that is getting far too much attention. While it is essential to recognize and appreciate different cultures and perspectives, the focus should be on building unity and strength within groups and organizations.

Instead of emphasizing diversity, we should focus on common goals, shared values, and the pursuit of excellence.

Diversity is touted as a strength, but the reality is that it can be a liability, especially when it comes to group cohesion and effectiveness. While it is important to recognize and appreciate differences in culture, race, and gender, these differences can also cause significant problems within groups and organizations.

One major issue with diversity is that it can lead to a lack of shared values and goals.

When people come from different backgrounds, they often have different beliefs and priorities, which can make it difficult to find common ground. This can result in a lack of direction and purpose, which can harm the overall effectiveness of the group.

Another issue with diversity is that it can lead to a lack of trust and cooperation. When people come from different backgrounds, there may be a lack of understanding which can make it challenging to build relationships and work collaboratively. This can lead to a lack of trust, which can ultimately harm the effectiveness of the group.

For instance, consider a sports team where players come from different countries. If the players do not trust each other or understand each other’s motivations, it can be difficult to work together effectively on the field. There are instances where they can work well together, but you will likely be able to recall many instances where this simply caused divisions and cliques.

There are many real-life examples that demonstrate the negative impact of diversity on group effectiveness and cohesion. Here are a few:

The Eurozone crisis: The Eurozone crisis in the early 2010s was caused, in part, by the diversity of the European Union. The Eurozone consists of 19 countries that use the euro as their currency, but each country has its own unique economic policies and priorities. This diversity made it challenging to coordinate economic policies and respond effectively to the crisis.

The United Nations: The United Nations is a diverse organization with members from all over the world. While this diversity can be seen as a strength, it has also led to challenges in decision-making and policy implementation. For example, the UN Security Council, which is responsible for maintaining international peace and security, has five permanent members with veto power (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States). This diversity of power and interests has led to a lack of action on critical issues, such as the ongoing conflict in Syria.

See a pattern?

The 2008 financial crisis: The 2008 financial crisis was caused, in part, by the diversity of the banking industry. Banks had become increasingly diverse, with different types of financial instruments, risk models, and incentive structures. This diversity made it challenging to regulate and monitor the industry effectively, leading to the collapse of several large financial institutions and a global recession.

The diversity of political parties: Political parties are often diverse in terms of their ideologies, values, and priorities. While this diversity can lead to healthy debate and a range of perspectives, it can also lead to a lack of cohesion and a failure to achieve common goals. This is particularly evident in countries with fragmented political systems, such as Italy, where it can be challenging to form a stable government and implement effective policies.

In all of these examples, the diversity of the group or organization has led to challenges in coordination, decision-making, and policy implementation, ultimately harming the effectiveness and cohesion of the group.

While diversity should be recognized and appreciated, it is also important to find common ground and shared values to build trust and cooperation.

Diversity in politics is especially insidious.

All you hear about these days is the importance of diversity. I would ask you to think about what good you believe diversity has brought any institution. specifically what good has come from it when institutions pursue diversity for diversity’s sake. When Diversity is the goal, we miss out on the strength that would result from naturally occurring diversity.

This is the kind of diversity that naturally develops through meritocracy. When people are valued for what they can bring to the table as individuals, rather than their skin color or nationality, a natural diversity develops and the overall strength of the company or institution grows.

When people are put in positions for nothing more than the color of their skin, the group weakens.

Additionally, diversity is an insult to people. Because it tells them they were not hired or appointed because of the skills and talents that they worked for, but rather because they had the right skin color or ethnic background. That is insulting, not honorable.

How many universities have admitted students because they had the right skin color instead of the right test grades? That is not a recipe for strength. That is a habit that will weaken the entire infrastructure of that university. And if society uses the same tactics then the strength of society will fade.

Reorienting the Mind to The Positive

Reorienting the mind to the positive is an important practice that can have numerous benefits in your daily life. By shifting your focus to what is positive, you can become more productive, efficient, and powerful, and you can also experience improved physical and mental health.

One of the key benefits of reorienting your mind to the positive is that it can make you more productive and efficient. Research has shown that a positive mental attitude is associated with increased productivity and performance, as well as better decision-making and problem-solving skills. For example, a study published in the journal “Psychological Science” found that individuals who were in a positive mood were better at solving problems and making decisions than those who were in a negative mood.

Reorienting the mind to the positive may be one of the most powerful tools you can place in your toolbelt.

One example of a study that has examined this relationship is “The effect of positive and negative affect on problem-solving” by Isen, Daubman, and Nowicki (1987). In this study, participants who were induced to feel positive emotions demonstrated improved performance on a problem-solving task compared to those who were induced to feel negative emotions.

Another example is “The role of positive emotions in positive psychology” by Fredrickson and Joiner (2002). In this review, the authors discuss several studies that have demonstrated the positive effects of positive emotions on various aspects of functioning, including increased productivity, better decision-making, and enhanced problem-solving skills.

Reorienting the mind to the positive
Another benefit of reorienting your mind to the positive is that it can have a positive impact on your physical and mental health.

Research has shown that a positive mental attitude is associated with a number of health benefits, including improved immune function, lower blood pressure, and reduced stress. For example, a study published in the “Journal of Personality and Social Psychology” found that individuals who had a more positive outlook on life had a lower risk of developing hypertension (high blood pressure) than those who had a more negative outlook.

In addition to the personal benefits of reorienting your mind to the positive, there is also evidence that a positive mental attitude can be beneficial for business productivity.

A study published in the “Harvard Business Review” found that teams with a positive culture were more likely to be successful and outperform teams with a negative culture. This suggests that reorienting your mind to the positive can have a positive impact on your professional life as well.

There are several Bible verses that support the idea of reorienting your mind to the positive. Some examples include:
  1. Philippians 4:8 (NKJV) – “Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.” This verse encourages us to focus on what is true, noble, just, pure, lovely, and good, and to meditate on these things. This can help us to cultivate a more positive outlook and to find joy and peace in God.
  2. Colossians 3:2 (NKJV) – “Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.” This verse reminds us to set our focus on things that are eternal and spiritual, rather than on things that are temporary and earthly. This can help us to find hope and purpose in God and to avoid becoming caught up in negative or distracting thoughts.
Also consider these passages.
  1. Proverbs 4:23 (NKJV) – “Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.” This verse emphasizes the importance of guarding our hearts and minds, and of filling them with positive and uplifting thoughts. By taking care of our hearts and minds, we can cultivate a more positive outlook and experience greater joy and fulfillment in life.
  2. Romans 12:2 (NKJV) – “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” This verse encourages us to allow God to transform our minds and to align our thoughts and actions with His will. By doing so, we can experience greater peace, purpose, and fulfillment in life.
  3. 1 Thessalonians 5:8 (NKJV) – “But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation.” This verse encourages us to put on the armor of faith, love
In addition to the biblical support for reorienting your mind to the positive, there is also a wealth of scientific evidence [beyond what we have already mentioned] supporting the benefits of a positive mental attitude.

Some examples of this scientific evidence include:

  1. Improved immune function: Research has shown that individuals with a more positive outlook have a stronger immune function, which can help to protect against illness and disease. For example, a study published in the “Journal of Personality and Social Psychology” found that individuals who had a more positive outlook on life had a stronger immune response to a flu vaccine than those who had a more negative outlook.
  2. Lower blood pressure: A positive mental attitude has been linked to lower blood pressure, which can help to reduce the risk of heart disease and other health problems. For example, a study published in the “Journal of Personality and Social Psychology” found that individuals who had a more positive outlook on life had a lower risk of developing hypertension (high blood pressure) than those who had a more negative outlook.
  3. Reduced stress: A positive mental attitude has been linked to lower levels of stress and anxiety, which can help to improve overall well-being and mental health. A study published in the “Journal of Personality and Social Psychology” found that individuals who had a more positive outlook on life reported lower levels of stress and anxiety than those who had a more negative outlook.
Additionally, positive outlooks can help with lifespan and measurable health biomarkers.
  1. Improved cardiovascular health: A positive mental attitude has been linked to improved cardiovascular health, including lower heart rate and blood pressure. For example, a study published in the “Journal of Personality and Social Psychology” found that individuals who had a more positive outlook on life had lower heart rates and blood pressure than those who had a more negative outlook.
  2. Increased lifespan: Research has shown that individuals with a more positive outlook tend to live longer than those with a more negative outlook. For example, a study published in the “Journal of Personality and Social Psychology” found that individuals who had a more positive outlook on life had a lower risk of dying from any cause than those who had a more negative outlook.
  3. Improved work performance: A positive mental attitude has been linked to improved work performance and job satisfaction. For example, a study published in the “Harvard Business Review” found that teams with a positive culture were more likely to be successful and to outperform teams with a negative culture.
Now that we have explored the importance of reorienting your mind to the positive and some of the benefits it can bring, let’s look at some practical ways to train your mind to be more positive:

I – Train your gratitude: One way to train your mind to be more positive is to practice gratitude. This might involve taking time each day to reflect on the blessings and advantages that God has given you and to express thankfulness for these things. Focusing on the positive aspects of your life and thanking God for them can help to shift your perspective and to cultivate a more positive outlook. We know this to be one of the ingredients in the recipe for peace.

II – Surround yourself with positive influences and avoid negative influences: Another way to train your mind to be more positive is to surround yourself with positive influences. This might involve seeking out friends and mentors who are positive and uplifting and avoiding people and situations that are negative or draining. Do not underestimate the power of a negative influence to damage you. Avoid them like the plague until you are powerful enough to manage them.

III – Set positive goals: Setting positive goals can help to keep your focus on the things that are most important to you and to cultivate a more positive outlook. Aim to be more positive. Define what that means for you on a practical level and then go to work on making it a reality.

IV – Train Your ability to focus on the present moment: Practicing mindfulness involves paying attention to your thoughts and emotions in the present moment, without evaluating those sensations. This can help you to become more aware of negative thoughts and to replace them with positive ones.

V – Train your body: Engaging in regular physical activity has been linked to improved mental health and a more positive outlook. Consider incorporating activities such as walking, running, swimming, or cycling into your daily routine to help improve your mood and cultivate a more positive outlook.

Reorienting your mind to the positive is an important practice that can have numerous benefits in your daily life.

By shifting your focus to what is positive, you can become more productive, efficient, and powerful, and you can also experience improved physical and mental health.

Work For God – A Technique to Work Harder

Have you ever wanted to work harder but felt like there was some sort of psychological barrier preventing you from doing so? Sometimes we try to train our bodies or do our work, but it feels like we are moving through sludge. We feel like we are trying to sprint in a dream, but are going nowhere. Oftentimes we simply lack the motivation. But one way to begin to combat this is to shift our perspective. We must always remember the fact that we actually work for God. This will help us improve our work ethic.

23 And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for[a] you serve the Lord Christ.

Colossians 3:23-24
The Bible teaches that if we change our focus from working for men to working for God, we can work more “heartily”.

Maybe you are unmotivated to work for your boss, remember that you actually work for God. Make that a constant reminder in your mind. We may not always want to work hard for our bosses if we are unfortunate enough to have them. But if we act as if we are working for God, our work ethic will naturally improve. We will not want to let Him down, so we will give more effort and quality to our work.

The Bible teaches that a way to increase work ethic is to shift your perspective.

Perspective change creates action change as well as emotion change. We usually do not have many huge problems in life. We only think they are huge because we have nothing to compare them to. The second we see someone with a real problem, we are faced with a stark reminder that our situation is not actually that bad. What changes our emotional and mental state in this instance? A change in perspective.

Our problems at work are only difficult until we lose someone we love or contract a life-altering disease. At that moment our previous issues seem petty. So why not shift our perspective now without the horrible event? How much better would your life be if you could constantly be aware of how great you have it?

And I am not trying to minimize the difficulties that many people go through. And at the same time, there is always someone out there with a more serious problem, who is worse off than we are. And that is a reason to be thankful for what we have now and whatever life position we are in.

All that is an example of shifting our perception in order to shift our mindset, and general mental state as well as our emotional state. We can perform the same perspective shift in our work, which is what the Bible is trying to teach us. We are not working for men, we are actually working for God. And if we make that shift, we will find that our mental and emotional state changes as well.

work for God

We work for God.

When we realize this and shift our perspective, the following will happen:

  1. We will begin to find a little more energy and zest in our work and life.
  2. What we do with our days will have more meaning, even if we are completing menial tasks.
  3. Our work ethic will linearly and naturally improve.
  4. We will be able to bring more quality to our work without feeling as if we are straining to complete it.
  5. We will become more valuable to those around us.
  6. We will possess a better overall attitude, which is its own reward and is highly rare and valuable in modern times.

Act as if you are working for God.

Whatever you act like, you will eventually become. Act as if you are working for God and eventually you will begin to have a work ethic that reflects that. And it will almost seem as if you did nothing extra to get there. Almost as if it were effortless. But it does take effort and energy to shift your perspective. but perspective, once shifted, will much more easily guide your actions through each day. Take advantage of the way you can guide your mind.

We will often work harder for others than we will for ourselves.

This does not apply to everyone, many people can create massive success only for themselves. Others need help to create more motivation in their lives. Maybe you would work much harder for your family or friends than you would for yourself. Why not combine this with the idea that you are working directly for God? And that you must do this work intensely.

The way we talk to ourselves and represent things in our minds changes the way we can create actions, especially at work. We need to learn that the work we do is important and that we can use changes in internal thoughts to create a better work ethic.

Shift your mentality and begin to work for God.

Responsibility – Take Ownership of Everything in Your Life

It is not natural to take responsibility for our actions. Look at the first man and the first woman who ever existed in the world. When they inevitably failed and were not obedient to the rules that God had set, what did they do? They shifted blame away from themselves (Genesis 3).

What this means is that is natural to shift blame to someone else and it is unnatural to take responsibility for our actions. But as we so often note, the right thing is seldom the natural thing. Christianity itself involves many unnatural behaviors. From avoiding pre-marital/extra-marital sex to loving our enemies, many of the commands of God require us to put aside our humanity for the betterment of humankind. Literally, we reject our physical nature and transcend to the divine by behaving unnaturally – or perhaps it would be better said that we act supernaturally. Not ghostly, but literally “above nature”, and the word itself is defined.

That said, taking responsibility for our actions is not natural.

It is easy to understand this because it is painful to take responsibility. And the greatest motivation for all human beings is the dualistic power of the pain and pleasure principles. We are constantly looking to either gain pleasure or avoid pain. And I argue that the urge to avoid pain is much greater than the desire to gain pleasure. Mediocrity is pleasant enough, why should I work to gain something better? But if the pain will reach me if I do not act and the only way to avoid that pain is to act, then somehow I can find the energy and motivation to take action.

Therefore, the push to avoid responsibility might be so strong because responsibility can be painful. It would be much easier to shift that pain onto someone else and have them take it for us. But this is not the masculine way to behave.

Being a man involves taking responsibility especially during the moments when it is neither fun nor enjoyable to do so.

That is one of the critical pieces of manhood – you take on the pain of life for the betterment of others. Usually, this is for the benefit of your immediate family. But you also think about how each act of taking responsibility will better your own life.

The next time you find yourself wanting to shift blame or make an error someone else’s fault, take a look at yourself. Examine your own contribution to the situation and think about what you could have done differently. Or think about what you still have the power to affect. It is a bad habit to constantly be looking at others and blaming them. It robs us of the power to direct our own lives because we suggest that “If this guy had just done XYZ then this wouldn’t have happened!”. That is not masculine. By definition, if we blame or shift responsibility we are behaving in effeminate ways.

responsibility

A simple way to be more masculine is to take personal responsibility for everything in this life. If you are not happy with something in your life, take a look in the mirror at the creator of that situation. Become aware of your habit of pointing fingers at others. It is not their responsibility why your life turned out the way it has.

Stop blaming everyone. No longer can you blame:
  1. Your parents
  2. The economy
  3. Your environment
  4. Your friends
  5. Your lack of resources (money/time/connections/skill)

If it is in your life or a part of who you are, it is your responsibility. You have to take charge of your life if you ever want to be free. No longer are you content to sit around pointing fingers at everyone else. The moment you begin to take responsibility, you begin to be free. And you find satisfaction with your life, no matter what state it is in. Because even if it is the worst life ever created, it’s still yours, you made it, your name is attached to it, and that has to mean something to you.  So take responsibility and find the freedom and masculinity therein.
