Mental Nutrition – You Are What You Think

Whatever you allow into your mind will shape the way you think and the way you act. Make sure your mental nutrition is positive and powerful.

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

Philippians 4:8

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Romans 12:2

“Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.

Colossians 3:2

What you allow into your mind will define you in life. Everything you allow into your mind develops the way you think and alters your perception of the world. Whatever consumes your regular thoughts determines what you are as an individual.

The man who consumes the news in the morning and evening and ingests it throughout the day becomes an outrage addict and ends up depressed about the state of the world. That man will almost never develop a positive mindset as a result of the constant consumption of mainstream media. He built that negative mentality with what he fed his mind.

The man who fills his thoughts with social media becomes a man who never lives his own life and who wallows in an inferiority complex. The man who fills his mind with “junk food” will develop the corresponding level of mental fitness. He will be fat and lazy in mind even if his physical body is in decent shape (which usually will not happen because an out of shape mind almost never produces a fit physical body).

The man who listens to effeminate music becomes effeminate
The man who listens to aggressive music becomes aggressive and can harness that aggression.

Whatever we think about is what we become. It follows that the man who consumes positive mental nutrition is a man who becomes a more respectable, successful and mentally fit individual. The man who fills his mind with positive stories and anecdotes of success or motivational speeches about perseverance and work ethic is a man who will eventually embody those characteristics.

The results of mental nutrition accumulate in their effects just as the results of physical nutrition accumulate over time.

No one instance of positive or negative mental nutrition will change you in a notable way because results are always gained over the long-term. The results of your thoughts are not seen until they compile into a mass. No single donut results in morbid obesity if you are already fit. No single training session will transform you if you are already out of shape.

For this reason you must commit to a long-term mental diet of positive thoughts. You cannot constantly put the negativity of the world into your mind and expect to be any better than the world. You are what you think, therefore, control your thoughts. Control what goes into your mind because that will determine what you think about. A positive mental attitude results in positive self-esteem which is the foundation for success.

Mantra

You are what you think.

mental nutrition

Application

Start a habit of consuming a positive visual diet every day. Fill your mind with motivation or knowledge. Cut back on the visual garbage foods that you enjoy eating like the news or reality TV (if you watch reality TV as a man, you need to go outside and chop wood right now).

Staying up to date with the state of the country and knowing how you are going to vote is good, but becoming increasingly depressed and negative as a result of watching the news for hours a day is not good. If you already know your political position then why are you concerned with what other politicians are doing? Is constantly calling the other political party “stupid” really doing anything for the country?

Replace the time you would normally spend consuming garbage with a positive diet of strong thoughts.

The internet has put dozens of mentors, positive thinkers and motivational speakers at our fingertips. Do not waste the extremely valuable resources that we have been given.

You have free access to all the positive material you could ever consume in a lifetime and much more. You are certainly more likely to hear something that would change your thinking and life through a positive speaker or mentor than you are to hear it through the local news station.

Just type “motivational speech” into your internet search bar and you will have millions of results.

You need to listen to at least one of these a day. You also need to reduce your consumption of social media and other assorted mental feces. Men do not waste their lives by scrolling through the lives of other people. You must have the strength of mind to reject these common trappings of life.

Control what goes into your mind and you will have a much easier time controlling your thoughts. Through your positive mental diet you control the soil of the mind from which the fruits of correct thinking will grow.

No man improved himself through facebook.

No man grew his character scrolling down on instagram.

Nor was a great man developed through the daily consumption of the news.

Men improve from strong thinking and from learning from other men. You can improve your life or waste your life through what the internet has to offer.

So learn and grow like a man.

Improve yourself.

Do not misapply the virtue of contentment to your character.

Feed the mind with the thoughts of a champion.

Conduct yourselves like men.

Glory – The Mark of High Achievement

“And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.”

2 Corinthians 3:18

The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one”

John 17:22

Weak males in the religious world avoid talking about glory for two primary reasons. One is that  they have never experienced any glory in their own lives. People always hate the things they cannot or have not experienced. Two: They mistakenly associate glory with pride.

If men in the religious world want to take a pseudo-moral stand against any idea or mentality, they label it as “pride”. Pride is the “all-purpose sin” that is just vague enough to cover anything that low-achievement religious men do not like. It is your responsibility to not be like these men in this way. They are thinking wrongly about glory and success. If glory is prideful, these men have justified being losers. If glory and success are amoral, however, then there is nothing that can be attacked with morality. Think of glory the same way you think of money: an amoral tool or the world.

A man can never do great work and be rewarded for it in the eyes of low-achievement men, any glory equates to pride in their minds.

The reality is that glory makes men who have accomplished nothing feel insignificant or inferior, so they have no choice but to label that glory as arrogance. Glory is not arrogance, it is a reward for doing something well.

If someone is more successful than you, they simply made different decisions than you.

Glory is also closely related to being praised. It is the result of high achievement. Glory is to be earned in life and it is not arrogant or selfish to seek it out. You should always be aiming to accomplish things with your life, and glory will come as a byproduct of that effort.

“Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings and not unknown men” –

Proverbs 22:29

For those who never attain glory on the earth, the afterlife is filled with glory for the way you maintained the faith here on earth. It is our mission to make it to that glory without becoming sidetracked by the thoughts of how boring heaven might be when described by many people. This itself is a tool of the devil.

Mantra

To live is glory, to die is glory.

glory

Application

Aim high in your life. Do not use your Christianity as an excuse to be pathetic in your career and in your personal life. If you are truly doing your work “as to the Lord and not as unto men” (Ephesians 6:6-7), then you will certainly attain glory, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Rid your mind of the wrongful propaganda that you have heard your whole life: people who receive honors are not arrogant.

People in the religious world can only accuse them of arrogance because none of them have ever achieved anything in their own lives.

Aim higher than you think you are capable of achieving, because you can do much more than you think you can.

Win the wars of your mind and accept the glory that comes with your accomplishments. Do not let the ego take over, avoid allowing your accomplishments to make you feel more important than you are. If you can command your ego in the midst of great accomplishment, you have mastered an important part of your character.

Accept glory, but never become complacent in your past achievements. You must always be improving, working towards something new, something that will bring additional glory or success.

It is not wrong to be successful and do not listen to anyone who says otherwise.

Work hard.

Focus on what matters.

Be great at everything you do by concentrating your work ethic into it and by doing it unto the Lord and not unto man.

Win the battle over ego

Command yourself and your mind as a general commands his men.

Conduct yourselves like men.

Forge Your Own Path

For whatever you think, believe and do in life, you must forge your own path.

“Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling”.

Philippians 2:12

So many men in the church have grown up their whole lives simply accepting whatever dogma was given to them by their parents. They never question a single drip of the doctrine that is passed down from generation to generation. Even if what they are being told is right, this mental laziness is wrong.

It is of extreme importance for every young man to forge his own path and uncover what it is he truly believes.

Every man has the responsibility of examining everything he knows and seeing if it is really true. As mentioned in an earlier section, one of the finest examples of the refusal to forge one’s own path is the Baptist mantra, “Born a Baptist, Live as a Baptist, Die as a baptist”. The emphasis here, therefore, is not on discovering what the truth is, but rather is focused on maintaining a personal label that one has invested in for years. That mentally shows that many men are not interested in having a logical “answer for the reason for the hope within them” (1 Peter 3:15), but instead are interested in living a life based on emotions. This mantra says, “Even if I am shown viewpoints that oppose my own and that may actually have merit, I will not give up my man-made, denominational name for the sake of truth”.

Forged in fire.
The masculine man is one who does not blindly accept what he has been told his entire life.

Instead he scrutinizes everything that he is told just like the Noble Bereans (Acts 17:11). He first examines the validity of the Creationist arguments and compares them to the evolutionist arguments. He then compares Bible-based Christianity to all other religions to see which is true based on fact. Finally, he compares what is taught in the Bible to what is taught in the various “flavors” of Christianity and chooses the one he can prove best fits what the Bible has to say. This is what it means to forge your own path. A man must have his own personal, intrinsic reasons for believing and behaving in specified ways.

The masculine man rejects the typical mental laziness of so many in the religious world and instead he “works out his own salvation”. You must ensure that you are that man and that you are never falling into the trap of mental complacency.

Mantra

I have a reason for everything I believe.

Forge your own path.

Application

It is of great importance that you deconstruct everything you believe, breaking it down to the most fundamental levels in order to determine why you believe it. You need to be able to explain your own position with good reasoning rather than with emotionalism or traditionalism. This starts by answering the most fundamental questions of reality:

  1. Why do you believe in a God?Explain why do you believe in the God of the Bible?
  2. Why are you a Christian instead of a Muslim/Hindu/Buddhist etc.?
  3. Why are you a specific “Type” of Christian (Church of Christ/Baptist/Methodist/Catholic etc.)? Can you defend your position as a Christian with logic?
Once you answer these big-picture questions, you can begin to answer all the smaller questions:
  1. Why did God command this behavior?
  2. For what cause did God instruct His people to take these specific military actions?
  3. Why does God operate in the ways that He does throughout the Bible? (Etc.)

For every question you have in your own mind, you need a clear answer. If you don’t think you will know how to answer a question someone might ask you, then you need to do some deep thinking and find a good answer. It is not enough to simply do something because you have always been taught to do it. You need your own reasons.

A masculine man forges his own path, character and philosophies from the foundation of logical thinking.

He is able to answer questions rationally, not emotionally. The masculine man is stoic and is concerned with the answer to the question “What is truth?”. He is not concerned with the answer to the question “Who is right?”

You have a responsibility to be this rational, masculine man. It is imperative that you have your own reasons for everything you do and you must never take anything at face value. A man is never excused from the responsibility of using his own rational mind to discover what is truth and, more importantly, to “work out his own salvation with fear and trembling”.

Conduct Yourselves Like Men.

Skill Versus Talent – Develop Marketable Skill

Talent is the ability that is given to you naturally , skill is what you earn through hours upon hours dedicated to the development and actualization of your natural ability. Talent is a foundation, skill is what you build upon that foundation.

“Do you see a man skillful in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men”

Proverbs 22:29

“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might; for there is no activity or planning or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol where you are going.”

Ecclesiastes 9:10

It is possible to become highly skilled at almost anything you want, but most men do not take advantage of this fact.

Most average men are skilled in watching football for long periods of time. Other men are skilled at chronically criticizing their wives (which for most men is a projecting of a lack of self-esteem and self-respect). Most men are skilled at nothing because they do not take the time to venture outside of the comfort zone and into the land of focused effort, so they remain mediocre for their entire lives. They then wonder why life didn’t turn out the way they wanted – why they are not rich, famous or successful. It is because they did not put any effort into any endeavor in life.

We as men can build skills that are marketable and then accumulate an abundance of wealth, but most men do not do this. They do not take the time to focus their mind or work hard to develop those marketable skills.

Skill. Welding.
Boys go to college and major in an easy subject rather than a profitable one.

They waste their four years of “education” in social clubs, drinking parties and other idle revelries that do not profit (Proverbs 14:23). They graduate from college and reality hits them: they have not developed a single marketable skill in their four years of college. Everything they know could have been learned through self-education on the internet. The fact that MIT posts hundreds of lectures for free online is evidence of this.

These boys are doomed to a job they will hate for the rest of their life unless they acquire profitable skills at some point. Reality sets in and the joy of life leaves them, or they ignore this emptiness by watching football and blaming circumstances and chance for how their life turned out.

If you want to avoid this meaningless life, build skills now, and build skills that make money in the modern marketplace.

No one is going to pay you to make origami or send text messages. Playing beer pong, being able to regurgitate meaningless information on a scantron and brag about your liberal arts degree will not earn you a single red cent.

If you are in college, you have the opportunity of a lifetime to build skills – and not just any skills, but skills that can earn money. And not just skills that earn money, but ones that can allow you to set up your life where you are bringing in money while you are sleeping or away from work. This should be the goal of a man: to never again have to trade your time for cash.

Skill. Pottery making
In college, you have more free time than ever in your life unless you lie to yourself and use the popular phrase of the weak: “I don’t have time”.

Learn to write, code, copy write, cook, build or sell items. Do not waste your college years or young adult years indulging in far too much social interaction than is necessary. Build a skill and learn how to sell it.

You do not have to build skills, you can always party it up now and blame everything but yourself for why you are a failure and nothing more than a mindless drone later in life. Marketable skill is the primary separator between the guy flipping burgers from the guy building mansions or packing out stadiums with his music. You have the power within you to be one or the other if you are willing to develop some work ethic and exchange your time for skill, rather than exchange your time for pleasure. Make the masculine choice to start building skills today.

Mantra

To possess Skill is to possess Worth

Skill.

Application

Acquire some decent habits. You need to be training yourself on some kind of skill every day.

Stop heating garbage meals in the microwave and learn how to cook, people will pay for that skill.

Learn how to build furniture.

Learn languages.

Go learn to build electronics or to code computer programs.

Any skill you work to develop is better than whatever nonsense you are currently wasting your time on.

You do not need to revolutionize your life right now, you just need to build and work on marketable skills every single day. You must be a good steward of your time by using it to develop skills.

Get a journal where you will write down the skills you will create. This can be combined with your habit journal, and together they will give you written, visual feedback on how consistent you are with keeping to your skill building every day.

All you have to do is practice a skill every day, and accumulate enough days of practice to make you a professional at what you do. Once you are a professional, sell your ability to the highest bidder. You have no choice but to be successful, and no excuse for being a failure.

Train yourself.

Focus your mind

Conduct yourselves like men.

Life – Taking Advantage of Time

“Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.”

James 4:14

“For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”

Philippians 1:21

Life is an allotment of time given to man by God for the purpose of obeying His commands. Some would call life a “gift”, I do not dare to be so naive. Life should be called a test instead of a gift. It is a gut check, a test of internal resolve and personal commitment. When men join the military they go through boot camp and are hit with all kinds of chaos from multiple angles. Some men “survive” and move on while others quit and go home. Some of these men go to advanced warfare training to become a special operations commando. Before they make it to special operations, they endure ridiculous amounts of discomfort. Only those who really want to endure can force themselves to continue.

Eventually these men realize that nothing can hurt them.

The training officers cannot hurt them.

Hours in ice cold water cannot hurt them.

Extreme lack of sleep cannot hurt them.

Physical exercise that puts the highest possible demands on the body cannot hurt them because the mind is stronger than anything material.

Physical training is the gut check for those Men.

Life acts as the gut check for regular men. For those soldiers, extreme difficulty is compressed into a few months. For the common, our difficulty is spread out over all the decades of our life and we never have to endure something so painful as a boot camp. Life is a long, slow war that demands the best from men. The only question is if men can endure all the way to the end of life.

Key: All of life simply is a long delayed gratification experiment.

Can we give up the pleasures we want now for the rewards we want later? Can we endure immediate discomfort for the sake of future enjoyment, or are we too weak?

God has issued commands that are painful to men. God’s commands cause immediate discomfort with the promise of a later reward. There is not a man of flesh on the earth who thinks that saving oneself for marriage is fun or enjoyable. Few men are not tempted by mind altering drugs that would take them away from the pain of the present life. We as men must choose this discomfort and curse the pleasure of sin (Hebrews 11:25).

You have been given a certain allotment of time to live your life. What are you doing with that time?

Are you wasting it for the immediate pleasure of life? Hebrews 11 states that Moses chose to endure affliction with the people of God rather than to enjoy the passing pleasure of sin. Most people point to this verse to show that sin does not bring lasting enjoyment. What most Christians deny is the fact that sin is enjoyable. Sin feels great. If it did not feel good then we would not do it. The only question is whether or not you will endure a similar affliction with the people of God or if you will give in to the sin.

The sin will be great immediately, but it will bite you in the end. Righteousness will be painful in the present, but bring enjoyment and satisfaction in the end. The small sins add up to affect your character negatively just as small acts of righteousness compound and reward you with a return on the investment.

You have to choose one of these paths. Not choosing a path is the same as choosing the path of evil – apathy is death. Apathy breeds stagnation. Stagnation breeds disease. Disease breeds death. Choose rather to be a Man and to progress.

Mantra

I am spending my time with frugality and wisdom.

Life. Time is Running out.
Life – Time is Running Out

Application

Treat the time you have been given the same as if you were given money. Would you waste all the money in your bank on nonsense or would you use it wisely? Invest your time today for the benefits that come tomorrow. Endure discomfort today knowing that you will be compensated for your sacrifice. Examine your life immediately and look at how you are spending your time.

Treat your time the same way you would treat your money and budget it. Write down the things you invest time into and see what you can cut out to replace with more beneficial and profitable investments. Half the work is budgeting the time, following through is easy when you determine in your mind what is worth spending time one.

Use your time budget to break down your spending habits and trim the fat from your days.

Write down what you are doing every waking hour.

Note how you are spending your time hour by hour and you will be shocked at how much time you are wasting.

Wasting too much time watching television? You likely are. Replace it with a profitable habit. Playing too many video games? You likely are. Find a way to make money instead, you will find it more rewarding over time.

Take a realistic inventory of your life: are you pleased with what you have done with your life? If not, take a good look in the mirror at the source of all your problems. Your life is nothing more than the accumulation of the effects of all your choices thus far.

Do not be discouraged if your life is a disgrace to all mankind, you still have time to change.

The intent to change is the catalyst for change, but intent alone will not bring about that transformation of the self. You must begin with intent then move to strategizing. Once you build your strategy for how you will spend your time, you must implement that strategy and be consistent with it, forcing yourself to spend your time wisely through tremendous discipline.

Do not waste the time you are given, there will be plenty of time to take it easy one life ends.

Armor your mind

Discipline your body.

Obliterate the demon of stagnation and the spirit of laziness.

Change your life.

Build wealth through wisdom

Gain knowledge

Read books.

Train your body.

Conduct Yourselves
